Book 'Em North Carolina Writers Conference and Book Fair brought together more than 75 authors, including New York Times bestselling author, Mary Alice Monroe, Hollywood Producer/Director/Screenwriter/Actor Chuck Williams and more than 24 award-winning authors, and authors of almost every genre for all ages under one roof to sell and sign their books, participate in panel discussions and talks, network and interact with fans one-on-one.

Hollywood Comes to Book 'Em!

Hollywood Producer-Director-Actor Chuck Williams will join us at Book 'Em North Carolina on Saturday, February 23, 2013 spoke about the process used in turning books into movies. If you ever wanted your book to be made into a movie for the big or small screen or turned into a television series, you didn't want to miss this talk.

Chuck Williams has worked as an assistant director to such Hollywood heavyweights as James Cameron, Rob Cohen, Kathryn Bigelow, John Badham, Penelope Spheeris and others. He has produced films for the Sundance Channel, HBO, Showtime and the Syfy Channel. He also produced Jeff Burr's critically acclaimed World War II movie, Straight Into Darkness, released by Universal Studios.

He is also an actor, appearing on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, on Showtimes' Californication, Bubba Ho-Tep, The Carbon Copy and John Dies at the End. He performed lead roles on Groom Lake, Soultaker, Up Against the Eight Ball, Double Blast as well as countless other films and television series, including The Young and the Restless.

After the day's events, Carolina Civic Center's Historic Theatre in downtown Lumberton, NC had a special showing of Straight Into Darkness, the critically acclaimed Word War II movie produced by Chuck Williams. He introduced the movie and provided some background regarding the making of this film.

Presented and sponsored by the Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater, which first opened in 1928 and recently was renovated, this film was presented on the theater’s 25- by 13-foot big screen.

  Bestselling Author Mary Alice Monroe to Headline Book 'Em!

New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe headlined the Book 'Em North Carolina 2013 event on February 23, 2013.

She says she found her true calling in environmental fiction when she moved to coastal South Carolina.  Already a successful author, she was captivated by the beauty and fragility of her new home. Her experiences living in the midst of a habitat that was quickly changing gave her a strong and important focus for her books.

Mary Alice Monroe’s novels are published worldwide. She has achieved many bestseller lists, including the New York Times, USA Today and SIBA.  She has received numerous awards, including several Readers’ Choice Awards, RT Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2008 South Carolina Center for the Book Award for Writing and was featured at the National Festival of the Book.  In 2011 The Butterfly’s Daughter won the International Book Award for Green Fiction.  It has also been selected as a finalist for the 2012 SIBA Book of the Year by the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA).

Mary Alice is an active conservationist and serves on the Board of the South Carolina Aquarium, The Leatherback Trust, and Charleston Literacy Volunteers.  She is a frequent speaker at book festivals, conferences, and private events.

Monroe lives with her family on a barrier island outside Charleston, South Carolina.  Her new novel, Beach House Memories (May 2012), is the prequel to her bestsellers The Beach House and Swimming Lessons.  Its release  completes her first trilogy-and Beach House Memories is currently on the New York Times bestseller list.
